The issue reminders readers that the deadline is coming up for signing up to two FTP events in Vienna focusing on the European Commission's 7th Framework Programme. It summarises the main findings of the Pulp and Paper subgroup of the FTP's Education and Training Group, with a call for significant changes in European education and training. Attention is paid to the upcoming FTP C2009 conference in Stockholm, as well as to a recent report that shows that forests will be heavily affected by climate change, with the risk that they will lose part of their carbon storage capacity.

As always, FTP-Update also presents the latest news about new research and development projects in the forest-based sector, such as the BECOTEPs project for promotion of the Knowledge-Based Bio-Economy and the second phase of the WoodWisdom-Net ERA-NET.

Forest-Based Sector Technology Platform - a European partnership for research and development

The Forest-Based Sector Technology Platform (FTP) aims at defining and implementing a research and development roadmap for the European forest-based sector. The platform is supported in its endeavours by a wide range of stakeholders. The FTP is an industry-driven platform for collaboration in a sector which makes crucial contributions to the sustainable development and competitiveness of Europe.

The platform is an initiative of the European Confederation of Woodworking Industries (CEI-Bois), the Confederation of European Forest Owners (CEPF) and the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI), lated joined by the European State Forest Association (EUSTAFOR), who saw the necessity of establishing a Technology Platform for the forest-based sector.

The FTP has as its vision (for the year 2030): The European forest-based sector plays a key role in a sustainable society. It comprises a competitive, knowledge-based industry that fosters the extended use of renewable resources. It strives to ensure its societal contribution in the context of a bio-based, customer-driven and globally competitive European economy.

Metsäsektorin teknologiayhteisön suomalaisen tukiryhmän tärkeimpänä tehtävänä on ollut määritellä suomalaiset tavoitteet ja kannanotot teknologiayhteisöön sekä ohjata teknologiayhteisön toimintaa vastaamaan suomalaisia tavoitteita. Olemme päättäneet kehittää suomalaisen tukiryhmän toimintaa niin, että se pystyy vastaamaan näihin tarpeisiin entistä paremmin.

Jatkossa tukiryhmän tehtävistä huolehtii tiivis ja hyvin verkottunut ydinryhmä, jossa metsäsektorin eri arvoketjut ovat mukana. Näin se kykenee nykyistä nopeampaan reagointiin ja kannanottoon sekä Suomelle tärkeiden tutkimusteemojen priorisointiin entistä paremmin. Uudessa tukiryhmässä ovat mukana:

• paperi- ja selluteollisuuden sekä näihin liittyvien loppukäyttöalojen, laite- ja teknologia- sekä kemiantoimittajien sekä uusien liiketoiminta-alueiden osalta Metsäklusteri Oy
• puutuoteklusterin ja siihen liittyvien alojen sekä uusien liiketoiminta-alueiden osalta vastaavasti tuleva puutuoteklusterin tutkimusorganisaatio
• metsätalouden osalta Metsäntutkimuslaitoksen, Metsätehon ja MTK:n muodostama konsortio
• Metsäteollisuus ry
